The Summer School has ended.

The 3rd annual “Summer School for Computational Immunology” was held as part of the NIH-funded Program for Research on Immune Modeling and Experimentation (PRiME) initiative.

Like all biological systems, the immune system acts across multiple scales involving complex interactions and feedback, from the molecular interaction of receptors and ligands to the systemic inflammatory reaction to disease. Computational modeling provides a framework to integrate observational data collected from multiple modes of experimentation and provide insights the immune response in health and disease.

The goal of the Summer School was to introduce graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty to computational modeling of immunity.

The Summer School took place at Yale University School of Medicine August 11-15, 2008. Its students included early computational biology graduate students, and experimental biologists who received an introduction to computational modeling techniques and their applications to problems in immunology. Several broad topic areas were covered by an expert faculty:

• Gene expression analysis and data mining
• Deterministic modeling
• Stochastic and agent based modeling
• Model fitting and parameter estimation

Each of the modules above combined lectures and hands-on computer labs, and was motivated by a group project developed by the students throughout the course. The final day of the Summer School took the form of a symposium on “Systems Biology of Immunity”.
More information on the symposium can be found at Systems Biology of Immunity.

Participation in the Summer School was free to those accepted thanks to the funding of our sponsors (see below). A number of scholarships were available to cover travel.

Further questions regarding the Summer School should be addressed to Uri Hershberg (uri.hershberg@yale.edu).
